Miss Akolekar operated on me 6/1/21. We first met after my diagnosis and I found her to me most empathetic and reassuring, but most of all she explained the procedures fully and in an understandable way. My surgery and after was in no way painful and the scar very neat. I am now 6 weeks on and will meet up with her next year.

I was initially diagnosed with Ductal CARCINOMA IN SITU just over a year ago. As 5 of my maternal aunts previously had breast cancer I was extremely concerned that I may carry the BRCA gene. From the very first meeting Miss AKOLEKAR was both gentle and reassuring. Moreover, she was clear and informative when explaining the clinical results, options, risks and expected outcomes.
To enable me to make the right decision I was urgently referred to the family Clinic at Guys Hospital where I was tested for any cancer linked familial gene. Whilst awaiting the results, Miss AKOLEKAR went through the options, including a double mastectomy, if I did indeed carry the faulty gene. She provided all the relevant information and even set up an informative meeting with a plastic surgeon to discuss options should I take the route of double mastectomy. Thankfully, I did not have a faulty gene and we moved immediately to options based on a risk assessment.
Miss AKOLEKAR performed a lumpectomy and sentinel node removal. Given the family history she removed a large margin of tissue from around the tumour. My recovery was good and the wounds have healed magnificently. A year on and you can hardly notice the scar.
I recently had an infection at the site of the lymph nodes and Miss Akolekar immediately booked me in for scans and a review. All is now well. The aftercare she affords her patients is truly exceptional.
In summary, you could not wish for a more empathetic and professional Consultant than Miss Akolekar. Her advice and guidance throughout has helped steer me through this journey, and without which, I doubt that I could have coped as well as I have. I cannot think of one single area where I could make suggestions that could improve care. Miss Akolekar is exceptional Consultant whom I am very privileged to have oversee my treatment and aftercare.

Miss Akolekar is a Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon whose substantive NHS practice is based at Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. She is the Clinical Lead of the Breast Unit.
She undertook her higher surgical training with the South-East Scotland rotation. She trained at the Edinburgh Breast Unit at Western General Hospital and subsequently continued her training in Breast Surgery at South East London and Kent Hospitals. On completion of her higher specialist surgical training, she was offered the National Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Fellowship at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guilford and Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead. She has worked with a some brilliant Oncoplastic and Plastic Surgeons to advance her surgical skills.
She is fully trained in advanced breast conservation and breast reconstruction. As a female breast surgeon, she is passionate about conserving the breast whenever possible and using plastic surgical techniques to ensure that women undergoing breast surgery have good aesthetic outcomes.
Deepika believes in establishing excellent rapport with her patients and empowering them with the knowledge and help them in decision making during their treatment Deepika has keen interest in clinical academics and education. She underwent a dedicated period of full-time research at the University of Edinburgh which led to the award of a research MD. She has presented her work in national and international meetings and published her work in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Deepika has a keen interest in service development. She introduced a structured telephone clinic at the Maidstone Breast Unit to convey results to patients in a timely manner thereby saving them a visit to the hospital and increasing the capacity in the breast clinics. She passionately believes in improving patient experience especially when they are faced with anxious. She has contributed to the development of Hospital@Home team which allows early discharge of patients after surgery.
Deepika has developed the Breast App along with her colleague Dr Russell Burcombe to provide patients reliable information during their treatment.
